1956 - Air Force Years

Hopedale (continued)

In the Airman’s Club, we played drinking games that involved counting and chugging beer if you messed up. There were 3 versions of the counting game: Tiz for the novice, Tiz Biz for the more adventuresome and Tiz Biz Buz. Tiz was for 3, Biz was for 5, and Buz was for 7. For tiz the counting went around to table and each time the next number was 3 or divisible by 3 or contained a 3 the person says Tiz and the direction of counting around the table reversed. The rules were the same for Tiz Biz except both 3 and 5 were involved and for Tiz Biz Buz using 3, 5, and 7. Now imagine 4 guys setting in a booth, call them A, B, C, and D, playing Tiz Biz Buz. We’ll start counting with A and he says 1, B says 2, C says Tiz, B says 4, A says Biz, B says Tiz, A says Buz, B says 8, A says Tiz, B says Biz, A says 11, D says Tiz, A says Tiz, D says Buz, A says Tiz Biz Buz, D says 16, C says Buz, D says Tiz, C says 19, D say Biz, C says Tiz Buz, … . Someone would usually mess up long before it gets this far in the counting and would be forced to drink. The amount to be drunk was determined before the start and may be as little as a swig or as much as a can of beer. The counting would then begin again starting with the drinker. We would sometimes pyramid beer cans at the end of the booth.

About once a month all airmen were required to do their duty in the kitchen, the dreaded KP. Since Ed and I really didn’t mind doing it once in a while, we would sometimes do it for someone else, for a small fee of course. We were getting paid about $100 a month and sending money home, saving for college when we got out.
